About the professorship

Mark R. Green, M.D., was the second director of MUSC Hollings Cancer Center and an internationally known expert in lung cancer research and treatment. His research helped to establish new treatment standards for people with locoregionally advanced unresectable non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

He came to Hollings from UCSD Cancer Center, where he helped that institution to gain NCI-designated cancer center status. He served as Hollings director from 1996 to 2000, then remained as a faculty member until 2004.

The Mark R. Green Endowed Visiting Professorship in Thoracic Oncology was established in 2010 by Dr. Green’s wife, Judith, and his daughters Dr. Rebecca Heinowitz and Ms. Hillary Green, on the occasion of Dr. Green’s birthday and in honor of his contributions to the field of thoracic oncology.

Dr. Green died in 2015. His family has continued to honor his memory through the visiting professorship and the Mark Green Young Investigator Award.
