Leading Research
With more than 230 cancer scientists across 20 academic departments, Hollings is working every day to add to our knowledge and improve cancer care.
MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is South Carolina’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center. This recognition reflects our high caliber of work and our ability to offer the latest treatments, groundbreaking research, and comprehensive support at every step of your cancer journey.
From early detection and prevention to innovative treatments and long-term survivorship, our dedicated team is here to guide you with expertise and compassion, empowering you to make informed decisions about your care.
Starting cancer care can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Whether you’re facing a new diagnosis or navigating a complex treatment plan, we’re here to guide you and your loved ones.
We believe in the best of both worlds – easily accessible cancer care close to home that is seamlessly connected to the expertise of sub-specialists at a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Through the Hollings Cancer Network, we are collaborating with MUSC Health’s regional hospital network, local hospitals, and community physician groups to extend clinical, research and education services throughout the state. We’re working together on treatment plans, providing services near the patient’s home whenever possible, using technology to conduct telehealth follow-up visits, and extending our sub-specialists' clinics into the community. And when the treatment plan calls for care to be provided in Charleston, our team stands ready to provide the best possible care, right here in South Carolina.
Earning and maintaining National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center status reflects the high caliber of work performed at a cancer center. Only 73 cancer centers across the nation have earned such status, which indicates they perform high-quality research into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. Hollings is proud to hold NCI-designation since 2009 – the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Carolina.
Our Nurse Navigation Program offers personal assistance from nurses with extensive clinical experience who now focus on guiding you through care. Your nurse navigator provides personalized care coordination, connects you with support resources, helps prevent treatment delays, communicates with physicians and other members of your health care team, and helps you understand your treatment options.
At Hollings, your oncologist is part of a team – a team that works together to share ideas, consult on treatment options and collaborate to provide the right care for you. The team includes medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, and more. Many of these providers come together in weekly tumor board sessions, where they review patient files to discuss options for each patient.
