To reach the goal of living in a cancer-free world, a multidisciplinary approach must be taken to find cures for this complex, insidious disease. Hollings Cancer Center encourages applicants from a wide variety of fields of study in basic, translational, population, or clinical sciences to apply. Fellowships will be awarded to those with the greatest potential to become independent cancer researchers and compete for extramural grants.
Initiated in 2018, the Hollings Cancer Center Fellowship Program is the newest in a lineup of cancer research endeavors sponsored by the Abney Foundation Scholarship, which was established in 1996 to support graduate and postdoctoral students who want to pursue careers in cancer research. In the ensuing years, the Abney Foundation Scholarship program has produced an extensive network of more than 170 researchers, clinicians, and educators who now serve throughout South Carolina, across America, and around the world.
Since the inception of the Graduate Fellowship Program, the MUSC College of Graduate Studies has contributed $5,000 per year towards stipend support for each fellow. To date, 21 graduate fellowships have been awarded.
As of 2020, some funds raised by the LOWVELO bike ride for cancer research have supported additional fellows. LOWVELO is an annual fundraising event, with 100% of rider-raised dollars benefiting innovative and lifesaving cancer research at Hollings.
