South Carolina Cancer Health Equity Consortium

The South Carolina Cancer Health Equity Consortium (SC CHEC) is an initiative between the Medical University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina, Claflin University, South Carolina State University, and Voorhees College.

Funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Defense, this hands-on laboratory research training platform in combination with career mentoring by some of the nation’s leading cancer researchers at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center aims to catalyze a new generation of diverse biomedical scientists. Within this new five-year initiative, 80 undergraduate juniors and seniors will engage with investigators at Hollings to expose them to the latest advances in biomedical research spanning basic, clinical, and population sciences with an emphasis on cancer disparity dynamics in South Carolina.

Program Goals

  • Identifying and implementing effective new approaches to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment through collaborative research.
  • Engaging community members in participatory research.
  • Developing a pipeline to attract and train a new generation of scientists who reflect the population they will serve.

Summer Undergraduate Research Training Program
