February 28, 2025 — Cancer Survivorship at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center: Then. Now. Next. (MUSC Alumni Weekend Symposium Opening Session)

The landscape of cancer care has evolved dramatically over the past few decades, but for cancer survivors, the journey doesn’t end with treatment. Today, there are 18 million cancer survivors in the U.S., and this number is expected to grow to 26 million by 2040. With this growing population comes the need for comprehensive, multidisciplinary care that addresses the physical, emotional, social, spiritual and financial challenges survivors face.

Evan Graboyes, M.D., MPH, will introduce the Survivorship and Cancer Outcomes Research (SCOR) Initiative at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, where the focus is on ensuring that survivors are not just surviving, but thriving. This collaborative session will lay the foundation for the session’s exploration of cutting-edge clinical care, novel research advances and the ongoing clinical trials helping survivors live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

The session will also feature insights into the transdisciplinary approach that brings together experts from across MUSC to address the complex needs of cancer survivors – from physical therapy and mental health support to caregiver resources and smoking cessation. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the “Then, Now, Next” theme of the symposium – exploring how far we’ve come in cancer survivorship care, where we are today and what the future holds.

Dr. Graboyes will be joined by SCOR members Jennifer Dahne, Ph.D., Alana Rojewski, Ph.D., and Katharine Schmitt, PT, DPT, CLT, as well as Amanda Kastrinos, Ph.D., a research scholar in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
