  • Dr. Carpenter was named the Associate Director for Behavioral and Population Science at Hollings Cancer Center. Congratulations Dr. Carpenter!
  • Dr. Smith was named the Co-Leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at Hollings Cancer Center. Congrats Dr. Smith!
  • Dr. Carpenter was named in the Flora McLeod Edwards Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research. Well deserved!
  • The American Society of Preventive Oncology awarded Dr. Carpenter its 2024 Joseph W. Cullen Memorial Award, which recognizes distinguished achievement in national tobacco control efforts.
  • Drs. Smith and Carpenter were awarded a new R01 (as joint PIs) to examine adaptive treatments for smoking cessation.
  • Dr. Carpenter received a new R01 (R01 DA 061566) to understand changes in how people use cigarettes and e-cigarettes. This grant will be conducted in coordination with Dr. Eli Klemperer at the University of Vermont.
  • Dr. Smith received two new R01s to understand whether e-cigarettes can serve as harm reduction tools among different populations. One trial will be conducted together with Dr. Erin McClure among people enrolled in treatment for substance use disorder (R01DA059969), and the other will be conducted together with Dr. Alana Rojewski among outpatients in MUSC and Hollings oncology clinics (R01CA293735).
  • Dr. Carpenter was interviewed for the Science Never Sleeps podcast on an episode called Clearing Away the Smoke About Cigarettes.
  • Dr. Smith was interviewed by local news outlets including the Post and Courier about her new FDA-funded trials.
  • Dr. Carpenter was recently interviewed by a group of researchers in the UK regarding a recently completed trial of e-cigarettes.
  • Dr. Smith received two new R01s from NIDA and FDA (R01DA057327, R01DA055985) to study regulation of flavors in cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Congratulations Dr. Smith!
  • Johanna Hidalgo and Liz Hawes started clinical psychology Ph.D. programs in fall 2021. We wish them much luck with their journeys at the University of Vermont and the University of Alabama Birmingham.
  • Dr. Smith won the 2020 Jarvik-Russell Early Career Award from the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT). The Jarvik-Russell Award honors SRNT members who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of nicotine and tobacco research within 7 years of receiving their terminal degree. Way to go, Dr. Smith!
  • Dr. Carpenter received a new R01 from the National Cancer Institute (R01 CA256729) to evaluate varenicline sampling for smoking cessation. Nice work, Dr. Carpenter!
