Team IMPACT

Team IMPACT (Innovative Methods, Products, And Cessation Tools) is a multi-PI laboratory led by Dr. Matthew Carpenter and Dr. Tracy Smith. Our goal is to improve tobacco cessation methods and develop better strategies and tools to help patients reduce or eliminate nicotine dependence. Through our research, we hope to reduce the public health impact of tobacco and nicotine use and inform effective public policy decisions about tobacco control. Our team conducts human lab studies and clinical trials across a variety of topic areas including tobacco dependence, tobacco cessation, alternative tobacco products, telehealth, and remote research methods development.

Drs. Carpenter and Smith are members of the Addiction Sciences Division within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at MUSC, and the Cancer Prevention & Control Program within MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Team IMPACT studies have been funded by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Food and Drug Administration.

Smoking cessation resources

If you’re interested in quitting smoking, we recommend calling the state tobacco quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. If you are local to South Carolina, you can also reach out to MUSC’s Tobacco Treatment Program for help quitting. Hollings Cancer Center also offers a wide range of smoking cessation programs and resources.
