Treatment and Support

By bringing together innovative research efforts and our blood and lymphatic cancer specialists, Hollings is able to offer you the best treatments possible. Since its founding in 1993, Hollings has continued to improve treatment of blood and lymphatic cancers to include:

  • A blood and marrow transplant (BMT) program that is ranked nationally as a top 10% transplant center based on survival. MUSC was the first hospital to perform a bone marrow transplant in South Carolina, and the first program in the world to perform an outpatient transplant with an unrelated donor.
  • Hollings offers adult and pediatric CAR-T-cell therapy programs that help your body recognize, and fight, cancer cells. Using state-of-the-art technology, our researchers are working to purify T-cells to reduce side effects and improve outcomes.
  • Our Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic brings together experts from multiple fields of medicine to deliver the highest possible level of care for patients with cutaneous lymphomas. Hollings is also the only cancer center in South Carolina to offer total skin electron beam therapy to treat cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
  • You have access to our state-of-the-art infusion center that is staffed by nurses who are chemotherapy-certified by the Oncology Nursing Society. Our advanced treatment may allow you to recover and rest at home, depending on the specific nature of your treatment plan.
  • Located on the 7th floor of MUSC Health’s Ashley River Tower, you can find a technologically advanced inpatient unit designed for immune-suppressed patients that uses the same sophisticated HEPA filtration system found in operating rooms.

Refer a blood cancer patient

To refer a blood cancer patient to Hollings, please call patient referral coordinator Debra Oree at 843-985-0567.

Nurse navigator support

Our blood and lymphatic cancer nurse navigator, Bonnie Boyce, BSN, RN, OCN, will help you understand what to expect during treatment and answer questions you may have.

Like all cancers, blood and lymphatic cancers can be best treated when caught early. Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly and avoiding smoking have all been linked to lowering your cancer risks. The most important thing you can do is listen to your body when you think there may be something wrong. If you are worried, our specialists at Hollings are here to listen to your concerns and act as necessary. Hollings also has prevention and screening resources available for you.

CAR-T cells attach cancer

Each day, Hollings researchers are studying how to improve treatment and give you the best outcome possible. This includes expanding our BMT program to serve more patients and offer more outpatient services.

Some recent research includes:

In addition, Hollings’ dedicated Hematologic Malignancies Transdisciplinary Cancer Team brings together expertise from different disciplines in basic and clinical research for monthly meetings to collaborate on ongoing blood and lymphatic cancer research.

Our clinical trials for blood and lymphatic cancer offer you access to cutting-edge therapies that may not be available anywhere else. Highlights include:

  • National recognition for our treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults.
  • Research and treatment program tailored for older adults (over 60 years old) with AML.
  • Comprehensive management for lymphomas and myeloma, including stem cell transplantation where appropriate.

Most people don’t know the symptoms and signs of multiple myeloma, but that’s not the way it has to stay. I want to do for multiple myeloma what the Komen Foundation did for breast cancer.

I don’t find shame in mental health. I don’t find that it’s anything you need to hide. It’s something that needs to be discussed so we can prevent things like suicide and self-harm. People need to know they’re not alone.
