About MUSC Hollings Cancer Center

Our mission at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is straightforward: to eradicate cancer.

There are fewer than 80 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in the U.S., and only one in South Carolina – MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.

As the largest academic-based cancer research program in South Carolina, Hollings’ mission is to reduce the cancer burden in South Carolina and nationally through innovative research, exceptional education and training, multidisciplinary patient care, statewide cancer prevention programs, and progressive public policy transformation.

We aim to find cures and improve the quality of life for those living with cancer.

Our NCI designation puts Hollings a step above any other cancer care delivery institution in the state in terms of cutting-edge research and patient care.

Community Outreach and Engagement

Our mission to reduce the burden of cancer in South Carolina means that our work cannot stay within our four walls.

The Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) works with groups across the state. Through innovative, evidence-based outreach programs, our team educates and empowers communities to understand how to reduce the risk of cancer and how to handle it once diagnosed.

COE operates a Mobile Vaccination Unit that travels to underserved communities to provide school-required vaccines as well as the HPV vaccine, a vaccine that can protect against six types of cancer.

And COE is spearheading a community scientist program so that community members can provide input into research proposals, grants and manuscripts.

A new, comprehensive cancer hospital

Cementing our commitment to outstanding cancer care in South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina Board of Trustees approved a resolution to build a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer hospital in Charleston, marking a bold and visionary step in advancing cancer care, research and prevention throughout the state.

The cancer hospital will provide one-stop integrated inpatient and outpatient services for all cancer patients, including outpatient surgeries, a step-down unit, inpatient and outpatient stem cell transplantation, dedicated cancer imaging (e.g., CT, MRI, PET), pathology and laboratory services, chemotherapy and infusion services, radiation therapy, a pharmacy, Phase 1 clinical trials, supportive care services (pain management, palliative care, cancer rehabilitation and more), cancer urgent care and community education.

Planning has already begun. The hospital is expected to open by 2030.
