  • Letter of intent is due on Monday, August 15, 2022, by midnight.  This notification is mandatory to moving forward in the application process and should include preliminary titles for each of the projects and cores, names of Project Leads, Core Directors, and other collaborators, including academic titles and departments.  To begin the application process by submitting a letter of intent, visit the application portal at the top of your screen.
  • A formal presentation of the overall program and individual project's aims, goals, and preliminary data will be scheduled for September 2022 following LOI submission.
  • Full applications are due on Monday, December 5, 2022, by midnight.  Please note that you will not be able to submit a full application without having completed the letter of intent or formal presentation.

Application Format

Use standard 11-point font, single space, and half-inch margins throughout the application components that are uploaded

Prior Internal Funding History

  • Mandatory; half-page limit.
  • Answer “Yes” or “No” to the question: “Have you ever received Hollings Cancer Center pilot project funding before?”

  • If “Yes”:

  1. State the internal funding mechanism(s) and project(s) period of execution dates.
  2. List (including the dates) extramural application(s) submitted and extramural grants awarded that were derived from the pilot award.

Scientific Overlap

  • Mandatory; half-page limit
  • Include a list of all Current, Recent, and Pending External grant applications. Describe any overlap or relationship between the listed awards, and this application. Give the expected notification date for each pending application.

For resubmissions only; one-page limit per project and an additional one-page for the overall proposal

For Each Project

  • Project Goals and Specific Aims State concisely the hypothesis to be tested and the specific aim(s) to be achieved during the two-year project period (one-page limit).
  • Research Strategy (four-page limit)
    • Background-Significance-Innovation (one-page limit)
    • Approach (three-page limit)
  • Future Funding Plans (Mandatory; 200-word limit) State how preliminary data from this project will be used to support extramural proposals. State the agencies, mechanisms, and timing of planned future grant applications that will utilize the preliminary data produced under this Team Science Award.
  • Literature Cited List only references pertinent to the proposed research. References do not count against the page limit.

Description of Potential Cores

Optional; one-page limit for each core. Include a description of how each core will support projects.

Community Outreach and Engagement Involvement

  • Describe the impact on the burden of cancer in Hollings' catchment area.
  • Describe how the proposed research will engage with community members and organizations in its catchment area to inform cancer research and control efforts of particular relevance to the catchment area population.

Not mandatory, but encouraged; one-page limit.)


Use PHS 398 form page four followed by a budget justification. Budget cap is $150,000 in direct costs. No indirect costs are allowed. No faculty salaries, student tuition and fees, or equipment should be included. Faculty effort related to this award must be listed. Salary or stipend support for laboratory personnel, RAs, postdoctoral fellows, study coordinators, etc. may be included. Every budgeted item must be classified into a category (e.g., supplies, patient care costs, etc.). Travel expenses will only be allowed when necessary to carry out the proposed research project.

Potential External Advisory Board (EAB) Members

Include a list of member names.


NIH-format biosketches for all faculty team investigators must be included. Personal statements must include the specific role of the team member.

Letters of Support

Letters of support from the appropriate individuals, which may include your Hollings Cancer Center program leader, collaborator(s), and/or mentor (if pertinent), are required.

Awardee Expectations

  • Publications: Awardees are expected to cite the Hollings Cancer Center Support Grant (P30 CA138313) and any Shared Resources that were utilized.
  • P01 (PPG), MPI R01, or equivalent, center-level grant submission within one year after pilot award period of execution.
  • Progress reports at month 11, project completion, and 5 years after the award has finished.
  • A presentation to Hollings leadership showing satisfactory progress toward project goals.
