Community Snapshots

In this section, Hollings reveals community snapshots of people who are changing what’s possible for cancer care by leveraging the power of partnerships. It’s a range of professions that vary from artists to pastors. The faces come in different shapes and sizes, but the goal is the same — advancing cancer care in South Carolina.

Amiri Farris

Amiri Farris

Artist • Bluffton, SC

Farris created the artwork in the banner above for Hollings to show the nexus of public health, safety and community well-being. He is a strong believer in the power that art can have on the community.

“I believe the arts can intersect with everything, even public health. Imagine if the artwork in hospitals and medical facilities were more engaging, how would that make people feel? I think it would be motivating and healing.”

Rev. Nelson B. Rivers

Rev. Nelson B. Rivers

Pastor • North Charleston, SC

Rivers knows he’s in a unique position to save lives — not just spiritually, but also physically. It’s why he’s proud to partner with Hollings on initiatives like the SC AMEN Program to raise awareness in the church about cancer risks and screenings.

“This program gives us the chance to talk to each other with truth. We need people to tell the truth about cancer and that’s what this encourages people to do.”

Katie Fox

Katie Fox

Teacher • Charleston, SC

Fox is on a mission to spread awareness and educate people about the importance of the HPV vaccine for their children. It’s why she joined Hollings’ HPV Parent Ambassador Program.

“I want to protect my kids in every way that I can, and this is a very easy way to protect them against HPV.”

Dr. Edward McCutcheon

Dr. Edward McCutcheon

Chief Medical Officer • MUSC Health Lancaster & MUSC Health Chester

McCutcheon is excited about the potential for the expansion of the tobacco treatment program to enhance the lung cancer screening program already in place at his hospitals.

“Given the high number of smokers in our area, we feel that this program is vital to the public health initiative to care for the community, and offering this will definitely make an impact on the ability to help patients who are smokers.”

Dr. Rami Zebian

Dr. Rami Zebian

Chief Medical Officer • MUSC Health Florence

Zebian and his staff have been very supportive of expanding the tobacco treatment program to MUSC’s regional hospitals and he emphasizes that it is a valuable service to offer patients.

“Having a tobacco treatment specialist here sends a great message to patients that we aren’t just treating them while they are in the hospital, but that we care for them even after they’ve been discharged.”

Jack Kustanowitz

Jack Kustanowitz

Technology Executive • Chevy Chase, MD

Kustanowitz and his team at MountainPass Technology are creating the app Dr. Jennifer Dahne will use in her youth vaping cessation study. Having worked with Dahne on other projects previously, he likes the opportunity to partner with researchers.

“Our new designs reflect our growing understanding of how mobile app users interface with technology to manage the treatment process.”
